Philip Ballou

About

Philip Ballou received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from University of California, Berkeley, in 1983 with a specialization in electronic and computer music. His teachers include Andrew Imbrie, Edwin Dugger, Richard Felciano, Olly Wilson, and Joaquin Nin-Culmell. He has received the Nicola de Lorenzo First Prize in Composition (1978), the George Ladd Prix de Paris (1979-81), two Alfred Hertz Memorial Scholarships in Music (1977 and 1978), and a prize from the Foundation for American Music Enrichment (1984). In 1980-81, he worked at IRCAM in Paris studying computer music synthesis, and in 1981-83, with Donald Buchla designing, manufacturing, and performing live on hybrid digital-analog electronic synthesizers. He is an accomplished violinist, having studied with Jacob Krachmalnick and Stuart Canin, and played in several orchestras and chamber groups in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ballou is currently employed as Head of Engineering by Jeppesen, a Boeing company, is a fellow of The Explorers Club, and lives in Alameda, CA.
