Ionel Petroi is a prolific composer who has written more then 70 orchestral, chamber music, ballet music, opera and instrumental ensemble works (also with data-processing devices). After winning the prestigious First Prize in Composition, “Stevan Hristic” in 1983 at the Belgrade Conservatory, Mr. Petroi moved to Paris, where he continued his postgraduate studies at the Conservatoire National Superiur de Musique in Paris, winning the Premier Prix of 1988, in Composition. His main teachers there were: Claude Ballif (composition) and Marius Constant (orchestration). During his years of studying composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Mr. Petroi was under the tutorship of many leading 20th century composers: Oliver Massiaen, with whom he studied in 1985, Ianis Xenakis, with whom he studied in 1987, Pierre Boulez, whom he worked with in 1988, and Gyorgy Ligeti. From 1987-1989 Mr. Petroi’s curiosity took him to IRCAM, Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, where he continued with his musical explorations, learning about new technologies and researching the vast varieties of sound production. Many of his works were broadcasted by radio France, TF1, FR2, FR3 and Canal plus and were presented in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Luxembourg Spain, Yugoslavia, Romania, Russia and the USA.
